Today I'm taking you to a place on Australia's east coast that many people just pass through – but which, in my opinion, deserves much more attention: Port Macquarie. Especially for backpackers, vanlifers, and 4WD travelers, this spot is an absolute gem. Relaxed vibe, great surf conditions, endless nature, and everything easily accessible. So buckle up, roll down the windows, turn on your playlist – we're rolling in.

What is Port Macquarie known for?
Port Macquarie lies roughly halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and is the kind of place you plan to visit for just a night or two – but then end up staying longer. The town is best known for its beaches, koalas (yes, really!), and a vibrant surf and boogie board scene.
What makes Port Macquarie so special is its perfect blend of city and nature. You have supermarkets, cafes, and everything a traveler needs, yet you can be in the middle of a national park or on a deserted beach in just a few minutes. It's incredibly convenient for van travelers: there are plenty of great campsites nearby, both official campgrounds and free spots (always respecting nature and following the rules, of course).

The must-sees in and around Port Macquarie
The Coastal Walk is definitely at the top of my list. It connects several beaches and is perfect for getting to know Port Macquarie. Whether it's a short stroll or a longer hike, the coastal views are simply stunning every time.
Another classic is the Koala Hospital. It might sound very touristy at first, but it's actually incredibly interesting and, best of all, free. Here, injured koalas are cared for and released back into the wild. Especially if you've been traveling in Australia for a while, you sometimes forget just how special these animals really are – this really brings that home.
For beach days, I can recommend Town Beach, Flynns Beach, or a little further out, Lighthouse Beach. Lighthouse Beach is especially perfect if you're traveling by car. It's a huge beach, often less crowded, and depending on the conditions, has really good waves.

Hiking in Crowdy Bay National Park
If you want to get out of the city for a bit, head to Crowdy Bay National Park. It's about an hour south of Port Macquarie and is an absolute dream for anyone who loves nature, solitude, and off-road tracks. A regular van will get you in just fine, but with 4WD, you'll have even more options.
The national park offers a mix of empty beaches, coastal hikes, lagoons, and campsites in the middle of nowhere. One of my favorites is the walk along the coast, where you sometimes don't encounter a soul and can only hear the wind, waves, and birds. It's precisely for moments like these that you travel to the other side of the world.
Pro tip: Plan to spend at least one night there. Cooking on the beach in the evening, watching the sunset, and waking up to the sound of the ocean in the morning – it doesn't get much more Australian than that.

Port Macquarie – Boogie Boarding Capital
Now things get sporty. Port Macquarie isn't considered one of Australia's boogieboarding hotspots for nothing. Many pros come from here or train regularly on the region's beaches. The waves are often powerful, yet manageable – perfect for bodyboarding and boogieboarding.
Even if you're not a pro: grab a board, jump in, and just have fun. The locals are laid-back as long as you behave respectfully and pay a little attention to surf etiquette. And if you don't have a board yet – no worries, there are plenty of shops where you can rent or buy one.
Even just watching is fun. Sunset, salty air, people in the water – it's precisely these little moments that make Port Macquarie so special.

Café recommendations at Flynn's Beach
After surfing, boogie boarding, or a long walk, a good cup of coffee is a must. Right on Flynns Beach, I can highly recommend two spots: Roam Café, with its excellent coffee, relaxed vibe, and perfect location for a quick break between the beach and the ocean. And Sandbox Café, ideal for breakfast or lunch – fresh bowls, delicious food, and a view of the waves included. Both cafés are absolute favorites among travelers and perfect for unwinding.

Conclusion: Port Macquarie as a travel destination
Port Macquarie is one of those places that isn't necessarily on everyone's bucket list, but that's precisely what makes it so great. No crazy crowds, no overrun Instagram spots – just an authentic Australian feel, nature, and a relaxed traveler community.
Whether you've just started your journey or have been living in your van for months, plan on spending a few extra days here. Chances are you'll end up staying longer than you expected.
Cheers
Jesko
