Today we're off to a city that's simply unavoidable in Australia – Sydney. For many, it's the first stop after landing, for others a short layover on the way up or down the east coast. I myself spent four days in Sydney last year and I can already tell you: even though four days are never enough, you get a pretty good idea of why this city captivates so many people.
More than just a big city
Sydney is loud, fast-paced, modern – and incredibly relaxed at the same time. Skyscrapers meet beaches, businesspeople in suits stroll barefoot along the promenade, and somewhere in between, backpackers sit sunburned and flat whites in hand. It's precisely this contrast that makes Sydney so special. For travelers, the city is perfect: good hostels, excellent public transport, and endless ways to fill your day without breaking the bank.
Coastal Walk from Bondi to Coogee
If I had to recommend one thing in Sydney, it would definitely be the Coastal Walk from Bondi to Coogee. This walk is simply next level. Cliffs, turquoise water, small coves, and beaches everywhere where you can take a quick dip.
We started in Bondi in the morning, took our time, stopped for breaks, and simply enjoyed the views. The walk is absolutely doable, even without being in top shape, and takes a few hours depending on your pace and how many stops you make. My tip: start early, bring plenty of water, and don't forget your camera.

Sydney Opera House & Circular Quay
Of course, the Sydney Opera House was a must-see. No matter how many times you've seen it in pictures, seeing it in person is something else entirely. It's especially worthwhile to wander around Circular Quay, people-watch, and take in the view of the Harbour Bridge.
We simply sat down, soaked up the sun, and absorbed the typical Sydney feeling. You immediately notice that Sydney is a world city – but in the Australian way: relaxed, open, and without stress.

Day trip to the Blue Mountains
Our day trip to the Blue Mountains offered a complete contrast to the city. Just a few hours from Sydney, and suddenly you're surrounded by nature. Eucalyptus forests, deep gorges, waterfalls, and viewpoints where you briefly forget you're actually near a metropolis.
We did see the famous Three Sisters, of course, but I much preferred the shorter hikes away from the main tourist attractions. Fresh air, wide open spaces, and just some peace and quiet – exactly what you need after a few days in the city.

Party night in Sydney
Sydney isn't just about nature, it also has a vibrant nightlife. Of course, a night out was a must for us. Especially in neighborhoods like Kings Cross or Surry Hills, there's a lot going on in the evenings. Many hostels organize pub crawls or pre-drinks, which are perfect for meeting other backpackers.
The atmosphere was international, relaxed, and exactly what you want after a long day of travel. Whether it's a club, a bar, or just drinks with new people – Sydney delivers.

Popular backpacker attractions in Sydney
For backpackers, Sydney is an absolute playground. Besides the classic sights, Bondi Beach, Manly Beach (easily accessible by ferry), and the many free viewpoints overlooking the harbor are among the highlights.
Hostels also play a major role: many have rooftops, their own bars, or organize daily activities. Add to that free city tours, weekend markets, and countless jobs in cafes, bars, or on construction sites – no wonder so many travelers stay longer than planned.
Conclusion
Sydney is not a city you can just "tick off" on a list. Even after four days, I felt like I'd only scratched the surface. It's expensive, yes – but worth every penny if you know where to go and what you want to experience.
Whether beach, big city, nature or party: Sydney combines it all in one place. For many, it's the start of an Australian adventure – and for others, the place they keep coming back to.
And so our family road trip comes to an end. What a wonderful four weeks it was! We saw so much, from Cairns to Sydney. These are memories for a lifetime. The route we covered in four weeks was the perfect amount for us. It wasn't too much and it wasn't too little. After busy days, we always had a few relaxing days, so it was a real holiday for my parents too. I can highly recommend this trip to everyone, whether alone, with friends, or with family.
Cheers
Jesko
